In the UK, with a legally binding Net Zero target for 2050 and a clean-power ambition for 2030, we are scaling rapidly to integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into the grid.

With complete independence from Octopus Energy, we are building a SaaS business that digitally connects hundreds of thousands of DERs with energy markets. As our UK fleet grows and we support our expansion across Europe, we are looking for a Senior Integrations Engineer to lead the deep technical build that turns customer sites into market-connected, controllable assets.

🏠 Where you’ll fit in and role summary

As we scale our fleet of integrated assets, we are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to take ownership of the new and unique challenges, whether that's a change to our design or an entirely new type of asset integration.

You’ll be part of an engineering delivery team, based in Manchester, who take an integration project from the very early information stage, design how it will be integrated into Kraken’s platform and then turn that design into a live, controllable, market-participating asset.

Engineering delivery is an innovative and engineering-focused team with a culture that fosters collaboration and fresh thinking to create a new energy system. Alongside design, deployment and testing; they constantly look into ways to improve efficiency through tooling and the automation of repetitive tasks. They collaborate daily with delivery managers and customer success to onboard new sites as well as support the existing.

🚀 What you'll own

• Integration design ownership & review: With minimal oversight, analyse provided information to formulate hardware and software integration approaches. When necessary, exchange information with customer technical representatives through meetings and emails. Review and discuss integration designs, considering the remainder of the integration cycle with other team members.

• Technical leadership & decisions: Make well-reasoned technical decisions and trade-offs for the wider team, provide technical advice on discussions that affect other teams or the company at large, and own the new and unique challenges, a change in our design or a completely new type of asset integration, driving them independently from start to finish.

• Domain expertise (SME): Be the point of contact/SME for at least one technical area. This could include knowledge of grid regulations (G99, G100, Grid Code etc.), energy markets, multi BMUs, industrial communication protocols, industrial networking, internet of things, cyber security and so on.

• Gateway application & configuration: The role will be interdisciplinary. There will be opportunities to learn how the Gateway software (developed by an internal software team) works and how it is configured. You will be expected to understand the requirements for an integration and judge if the gateway software is able to support it or will need new development work. The team will help you get gateway configuration literate and you will be expected to carry out deployments and changes as necessary.

• Networking and cyber security: Develop hardware and network connectivity designs, constantly thinking about our own cyber security posture as well as addressing the concerns from the customers with the support of the internal security team.

• Site testing & commissioning: Get involved in deployment and testing to understand how the commissioning and go-live works. Over time, you will be expected to carry this independently as we may need to flex at times due to the increase in the onboarding demand.

• Incidents & compliance: Be comfortable with addressing the engineering help requests from other teams and with the incident command in the case of issues at the existing sites.

• Business-facing & growth: Support client delivery in meetings with the clients to understand the integration challenges in advance. Aid with the expansion into the EU markets by looking into asset types and integration technologies.

🧠 What you'll bring to the party

• Understanding of the Regulations: Strong understanding of the UK Grid Code, G99 the other liabilities of a grid connected asset before participating in the energy markets.

• Understanding of the UK Energy Markets: Strong understanding of the NESO ancillary services (Dynamic Containment / Moderation / Regulation, Firm Frequency Response), the Balancing Mechanism, and the DNO connection/integration process.

• Technical judgement: Ability to make and justify well-reasoned technical decisions and trade-offs for the wider team, and to take a problem in hand, create a solution framework, agree it with the team and implement it.

• Power plant systems: Strong ability to analyse single line diagrams for a given power plant to understand the site architecture for the points of metering and control instrumentation.

• Asset integration: Experience integrating BESS (grid-scale and/or C&I) and/or RES (Wind and Solar) for telemetry and control.

• Integration design: Ability to produce clear integration designs and design documentation, set standards and patterns, and review others' designs.

• Hardware and Networking: Experience with control systems deployments and their connectivity including the local networking and cyber security aspects. The ability to debug site connectivity and networking issues that includes 4G routers and firewalls.

• Industrial Communication Protocols: Strong practical experience with Modbus (TCP/RTU), plus one or more of IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61400-25, OPC-UA or DNP3.

• CAD, Diagrams and Tools: Experience or familiarity with CAD tools such as AutoCAD or BricsCAD, Miro and Notion.

• Communication & mentoring: Ability to communicate technical decisions through design docs, tech talks and Notion, and to mentor more junior engineers with constructive feedback and guidance.

• Commissioning landscape: Strong understanding of the other parties involved in site commissioning for power plants, their roles and responsibilities, and how we work with them.

• Engineering background: Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Automation/Control, Software, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience in industrial/energy integration.

• Travel: Willingness to travel to customers and sites although travel is very occasional. Awareness of site safety is required as we may work with site personnel even though we are remote.

• You are a driver and an owner: you take on the hard, ambiguous problems and see them through. You think bigger picture and process, are risk-aware and warn peers in advance, lead on safe working, and are trusted by customers as a technically competent, safe pair of hands. You actively grow the people and the practices around you, and you advocate for the Engineering team within Kraken and beyond.

⭐️ Bonus points

• Wider knowledge of grid compliance (G99, G100, Grid Code) and where the Kraken system fits in.

• Experience with AWS IoT Greengrass or similar edge-deployment architectures.

• Familiarity with software/scripting and templating (e.g. Python, Rust, the Linux command line) and Git-based workflows.

• Understanding of IT/OT security in the energy sector (IEC 62443, NCSC CAF, NIS Regulations awareness).

• Exposure to wider European balancing markets / ENTSO-E frameworks and TSO integrations.
